The cause of death was a stroke that led to coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse, according to the death certificate issued by the Vatican. His death occurred at 07:35 a.m. at his residence, Domus Sanctae Marthae, in the Vatican.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, served as the head of the Catholic Church for 12 years, from 2013 to 2025. He was the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to assume the papacy. His papacy was characterized by an emphasis on humility, social justice, environmental sensitivity, and the promotion of inclusion, especially towards marginalized groups.
